Getting Messy

While trying to figure out the solution to one of the tasks below...

1.  What is the linear dimensions of this gigantic ball of twine?  

2.  How long would it take to fill up the hand dug well from a regular water hose?  
What would the equation look like?

3.  What would a graph look like if we were able to 
fill the TeePee to the top at a steady rate? 


Students came up with some ingenious ideas!

1.  To solve for the linear dimensions of the sphere of twine in Cawker City, students...
         1)  Found the volume of a 12-inch piece of twine.
         2)  Found the volume of a tiny sphere made from a 12-inch piece of twine
         3)  Found the mass using a scale.

2.  To solve for how long it would take to fill the Big Well, students...
         1)  Calculated how long it would take to fill up a 5 gallon bucket.
         2)  Found the average rate of water coming out of a garden hose using internet sources
         3)  Found the volume of the bucket in ft. cubed along with the water pressure here at RVMS

3.  To solve what the math behind the TeePee filling up, students...
         1)  Attempted to reconstruct water pouring into the TeePee using a snow cone cup, straw, and a homemade funnel.
         2)  Filled up a snow cone cup and inverted the data.
