As I help gear up my 8th graders for Algebra 1 next year,
We've taken a more concentrated look on solving equations.
I found two games that we used today in class that addressed the areas, variables on both sides and the distributive property, quite well.
Connect Four website to use on the laptops
and the iPad app, Tic Tac Algebra.
To ensure that all students were getting practice, everyone had to show the work of each problem whether it was their problem to solve or not. This allowed for teachable moments between partners when they compared their answers!
Moving forward is a good thing. If you don't move, you become stagnant. If you become stagnant, you smell. (I'm going with a creek bed analogy here...stay with me). "It Is What It Is" helps us to keep our sanity as we try new things, but at the same time we should never settle for "what it is". We should constantly reflect and learn to move our teaching and our student's learning to higher levels so the classroom doesn't turn stale.
