MACE - Podcasting and iMovies - Barry Sevett

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME workshop.  Hands-on and exactly what I was needing to learn!  Here are my notes, step by step, of how to make a podcast and an iMovie.

Open up Garageband
- Record instruments
- compose music by laying down tracks
- can score movies and get a more complex sound 

PODCAST
Select podcast
Choose
Name your podcast
Click create
Three sections
 Tracks - top left hand
    Four tracks to start with
    Podcast track for images
    Jingles for beginning or background music
 Edit window... Bottom window
     Close with clicking scissors
 Media browser... Lists iTunes library, iphotos, movies

Start out with five seconds of silence
Half triangle at top...move it out five seconds

Have script typed ahead of time...script can be on iPad

Can press spacebar to stop recording.
Can move script head to beginning and hit spacebar

Click segment you want to delete and hit delete.

On bottom left there is a slider to select how long recorded bars are.

To insert music or interviews, go to media
 Select interview and line up black line to end of previous track.
 Can drag interview into one of the voice tracks
Remember can place script head wherever and press spacebar to start playing

Things to remember for class projects
1.  Have students write out script beforehand
2.  Require more than one speaker

Putting in images ... Podcast track
Open up editor window...bottom of screen
Open up media browser and select photos

When creating a podcast you can put in your episode artwork...bottom left 
 Will play throughout entire podcast unless other images are put into the podcast
Move playhead to where you need the next image and take the picture of what you want in the podcast.

Click on picture in podcast track to get preview screen

If a picture is too long..grab the end of the picture bar and line it up to the end of the speaking bar.

Click on eyeball..click on jingles
Find the one you want and drag and drop into jingles track
Grab jingle at top corner to lengthen it
Grab jungle bar in middle of the end of the bar to crop it 

To fade it out...
 Slide dot in jingles track can make music quieter
 Clicking the arrow in bottom right of jingle track ... You can customize the sound of the track by clicking on the track volume bar (underneath jingle track) to create dots.  Move the dots up or down for sound variation.

Control menu item
 Ducking...when two play at e same time one will be ducked up
  Yellow arrow  is ducked up
  Blue arrow us ducked down

Share podcasts to iTunes ... Will create an mp3 file in your iTunes file
Send podcast to iWeb...iWeb will create a subscription format for your podcast
Export podcast to disk...creates a stand alone project.  Can put it in a blog.
 Click export
 On desktop

In edit window...you can put URL addresses in the chapters.
 To create chapters, hit the P key

DROP BOX as an app on iPad

iMOVIE

Four sections
Top left ... Project area...can work on 
Top right ... Preview area
Bottom left ... Event library
Bottom right ... Where video shows up of the one we selected

Bar across the middle
Far left ... Recording, slide bar of size of thumbnails
Far right ... Media browser

Apple.com/iLife

File 
New project
Name the project
Can choose screen size
Pick a theme...check mark automatically pick transitions and titles

Click on camera to record you in action
Click capture
Create a new event
Name it
Capture

Hint:  when needing to pause, put thumb up in front of camera

To delete an event... Select, command and delete

Slider at bottom right to collapse video bar
Select by putting cursor at beginning and drag the whole way
Drag and drop it into project library

Non destructible video in event library

Use slider in middle row to stretch out video bar
Find where thumbs up
Select clip to insert and drag on top of video.
 Choose what you want to do with it.
 Clicking insert splits the first video

iMovie preferences
Select advanced tools on

Can insert stills into the video but can still hear the voice...use cutaway

Move cursor to where you want to play from and press spacebar.
